An interesting study finds that in split-second decisions, referees are more likely to favor athletes in red (over blue).  So, even without the home-field advantage, should we expect China to clean up at the Games this summer?

A planet-wide survey of some 30,000,000 instant messages (via Microsoft) sent by 240,000,000 people have confirmed that, in fact, Kevin Bacon is God. really is separated by six degrees.  Moreover, anyone is approximately six degrees away!

As a physicist, I think this is freakin awesome.  Even as a physics graduate student, I still might have a career at Google waiting for me in a few years!

While I’m all for keeping an open mind about scientific theories, I have to draw the line somewhere.  ”Flat-earthers” earn no respect from me.  They’re just silly.

I’m not sure how, or where, they would do this.  But, apparently, 125,000 Western lowland gorillas were hiding from us… until now.  While it’s cool that there’s so many more of them than we thought, I’m sure they would have preferred being undiscovered.

I’m a huge fan of spadout.com.  If you’re an outdoorsy person, you should be, too.  And, if you’re considering registering with the site (leaving gear reviews is so fun!) you should do it via this link.  If even ONE person leaves a review with my referral I get a spadout t-shirt!  Help a guy out!  :)

Forget about health care, wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, the economy / mortgage crisis, and all other insignificant political talking points.  The only question that really matters: who do you want to go up against the aliens?

Update: I just noticed this is the 100th post on this blog!  Woo centennial!

Was Copernicus really right?

It’s true that we, as scientists, have held as tightly to the Copernican Principle as a five year old to their Legos (do kids still play with Legos these days?).  Though admittedly, there is a lot of scientific evidence that backs it up (see any text on cosmology), the questions should be asked:  What if we are special in the universe?
